THE LOCK
One continuous ascent through a three-chamber navigation lock at dawn — from a shut gate on black water, up through the rising chambers, to the whole flight in morning sun. No narration. The light only ever gets warmer.
Scroll to move
The gate not yet crossed
Twenty minutes before sunrise, on open water outside the lock. One lamp in the gate recess is the only warm thing in the frame. In the last second the mitre seam parts.
Through the gate
The chamber lights itself
The recessed wall lamps switch on in sequence down the length of the chamber. This is the only time in the film that any light changes state.
Along the chamber
The water rises
The camera does not move; the building does. The walls slide down past it, the copings descend to meet it, and the waterline stays exactly where it is.
Over the sill, into the second chamber
The first sun
A narrow hard-edged wedge comes over the coping and lies on the top quarter of the wall. Everything else is still in cool shadow. The water has not been touched yet.
Up the flight
The last gate cracks
The upper gate parts and low morning sun comes through the opening horizontally for the first time, laying one hard path along the water toward the camera.
Through, into the light
The gates lie back
Each leaf travels back into its concrete recess until it lies flush with the wall and the gate line stands completely clear.
The whole flight
Three chambers of water at three descending levels, seen in profile from the bank. The climb becomes a single visible line — and the gate at the head of it is open, where the first gate was shut.
Twenty-six metres, one dawn
The gate is the threshold in the literal sense: a doorway with different water on each side of it.
